Get Glowing: Nicole's Skincare Tips

I’m all about self-care and self-love. When you feel good on the outside, you feel good on the inside and vice versa. My mother taught me that at a young age and that mentality has pursued me to work in the skin and health care industry. Being an esthetician, makeup artist, nurse-in-training and a patient representative at a renowned dermatology office, I get asked all the time about what products to use to achieve glowing, healthy skin. In my opinion, it’s quite simple despite the overwhelming amount of information and products on the market today.

First things first, you need to determine your skin type because not all products and regimens are right for every person. If you’re unsure of your skin type, make an appointment with an esthetician or dermatologist so they can give you a thorough analysis. Then, it’s all about consistency and maintenance.

My skin type is considered combination which means my skin can be normal-to-dry in some areas and then oily in others, which is always in the T-zone (nose, forehead, and chin) for me. To help balance hydration and oil production, these are the products that have been most effective for my skin:

If you wear makeup, I always suggest pre-cleansing. I use Neutrogena’s Makeup Remover Towelettes.

After I remove my makeup, I use the Ultra Calming Cleanser by Dermalogica. This cleanser is very gentle and great for all skin types especially sensitive skin. Lavender is one of the main ingredients which is another reason I chose this product. Lavender helps soothe, heal, and balance. It also is anti-bacterial which can inhibit breakouts.

I follow cleansing with toning. It ensures your skin is as clean as it can be which enhances serum and moisturizer absorption. My favorite toner is another lavender-based product called Rosée Visage by Phytomer.

Serums are concentrated active ingredients that target specific concerns. The two I’m currently using have made a significant difference in the appearance of my skin. I suggest using one in the morning and one at night before you apply your moisturizer.

AMCE Ferulic by SkinCeuticals

This is an antioxidant serum which helps prevent against free radical damage (another factor that accelerates skin aging) due to environmental stressors such as pollutants and UV rays. It also helps brighten your complexion and promotes collagen production.

*A less expensive option that I also recommend is the C-Firma Day Serum by Drunk Elephant.

PMAlphaRet Overnight Cream by SkinBetter Science

When I started using this product I received SO many compliments on my skin. It is an all-in-one medical-grade serum that contains alpha hydroxy acids, retinol, and hyaluronic acid which I believe are all essentials to have in your skincare regimen no matter what your skin type is. This product will improve skin tone and texture, diminish and prevent against lines/wrinkles, and hydrate as well.

If you’re hesitant about the combination of AHAs and retinol, this serum is proven to deliver the same results without irritating the skin. It is a one-of-a-kind formula – I can go on and on about how obsessed I am with it! Since it’s such a high-quality product you can only purchase it in medical offices like SkinCare Physicians in Chestnut Hill. If you’re in need of a dermatologist, I highly recommend them!

Another secret weapon of mine to maintain my glow: Alpha Beta Universal Daily Peels by Dr. Dennis Gross. I use these once a month to remove any excess dead skin. These are great too if you’re looking for a quick way to make your skin look radiant before an event, date night, or a girls’ night out!

I’ve been loving the Skin Smoothing Cream by Dermalogica. It is a medium-weight moisturizer that smooths and nourishes your complexion while locking in the benefits of your serums.

And always apply sunscreen after moisturizing. Your future self will thank you!

Also, I know these products are expensive. Story of my life:

“Where’s all your money?”

“It’s on my face.”

So if you’re unable to splurge, the three things you should always do for your skin is cleanse, moisturize, and protect it with sunscreen. Other things you can do to promote glowing, healthy skin:

-Drink plenty of water

-Don’t go to bed with makeup on

-Get enough sleep

-Don’t overeat junk food; overeat veggies + fruit instead

Get glowing!!
